Roof Access Safety System for K&S Adelaide
For large workshop and warehouse environments, safe roof access needs to be planned properly from the outset. It is not enough to simply provide a way onto the roof. That was the focus for RISSafety at the K&S Adelaide project on Eastern Parade, Gillman, delivered for Vaughan Construction.
The brief called for a practical roof access safety system across multiple areas of the site, including:
- Ladder access to the workshop
- Warehouse roof areas
- Top of the cool room areas
With regular maintenance access required, the roof solution needed to provide safe, controlled movement across key roof zones while helping manage fall risks near and around exposed edges.
Understanding the access challenge
Industrial and logistics facilities often have several roof areas, service zones, and maintenance requirements operating across the one site. That can make roof access more complex than it first appears.
At K&S Adelaide, the challenge was not limited to a single access point or one roof level. To support safe roof access for future maintenance needs, the project required ladder access across multiple areas and buildings, with fall arrest systems installed.
The cool room areas demanded particular attention. These elevated areas included live edges, meaning workers needed a suitable perimeter protection solution to support safer access and reduce exposure to open edges during routine inspection and maintenance tasks.
For Vaughan Construction, the priority was clear: install a reliable roof access system without causing issues or delays to the broader construction program.
The RISSafety solution
RISSafety delivered a comprehensive roof access safety system designed around the way the site would be accessed and maintained over time.
The completed safety works included:
- 10 compliant ladder systems installed across multiple areas and buildings.
- Providing clearly defined access points to the workshop and warehouse roof areas.
- 100 anchor points installed strategically to support safe roof access and support fall arrest capability for workers carrying out future maintenance.
- 130 lineal metres of aluminium guardrail installed around the cool room live edges for perimeter protection for workers accessing elevated zones.
By combining ladder access, anchor points and aluminium guardrail, the system created by RISSafety gave the site a more complete roof access solution across the whole site where safe movement and fall risk management is required.
Delivered without disruption
One of the key outcomes of the project was the way it was delivered.
The RISSafety team completed the works on time, with no issues or delays to the construction program. On active construction projects, that matters. Height safety systems need to be installed carefully, but they also need to be coordinated properly so other trades, timelines and handover requirements are not affected.
For Vaughan Construction and the K&S Adelaide site, the result was a roof access system that could support future maintenance requirements while allowing the project to continue without avoidable interruption.
Why planned roof access matters
Projects like K&S Adelaide show why roof access should be considered as part of a site’s long-term operational needs, not as an afterthought.
