How RISSafety created a height safety solution for Glenorchy Hungry Jacks

Roof safety system installation featuring metal guardrails and access points, emphasising RISSafety's height safety solutions for construction sites.

When the Hungry Jacks in Glenorchy, Tasmania, was completely destroyedby fire in August 2024, it was obvious that not only would they rebuild, but the new venue would be even better. The fire caused damage of approximately $5 million.

Macquarie Builders, a Tasmanian-owned construction company with more than 20 years’ commercial build and renovation experience, was tasked with the rebuild. RISSafety was chosen to deliver a comprehensive height safety solution for maintenance teams.

Discover how RISSafety achieved a complete height safety solution in a timely manner.

How a fire destroyed the restaurant

The fire started in the kitchen at around 8.30 PM and it wasn’t long before the entire building was in flames. Thankfully, customers and staff escaped as firefighters from Hobart, Glenorchy, Claremont and Clarence extinguished the fire. In the coming days it was apparent that the building would need to be demolished and rebuilt.

 A compliant height safety solution

Working on the Hungry Jacks rebuild with Macquarie Builders, RISSafety created a height safety solution that included:

  • Installation of anchor points, guardrails, ladders and walkways
  • Comprehensive risk assessment
  • Site audit testing
  • Certification by qualified height safety inspectors
  • User training and system handover documentation.

The RISSafety team overcame significant challenges, including working at heights on complex roof geometry, and scheduling work with minimal disruption to operations. This required planning and coordination to ensure safety for everyone on site.

As Australia’s largest designer, manufacturer and installer of height safety and access solutions, RISSafety’s team developed bespoke solutions tailored to the site requirements.

As with all projects, the team conducted a thorough analysis before using the in-house engineering workshop to design and manufacture the required components of the solution.

 The finished project

The solution ensured compliance with Australia’s stringent hierarchy of control requirements while creating a user-friendly system to keep maintenance workers safe at heights.

The new Hungry Jacks restaurant opened on June 27, less than a year after being destroyed.
