Safe Roof Access System for Noosa Heads Ambulance Station

At Queensland’s Noosa Heads Ambulance Station, QBuild-Public Works hired RISSafety to design and implement a permanent safety system for their roof. The building required a suitable roof access solution to safely access the roof and service areas, without disturbing the station’s regular emergency operations.

Since there was no roof access in place, RISSafety created a custom system that included roof-to-roof access ladders and permanent roof safety railings to provide efficient, safe, and compliant access for their routine inspections and maintenance.

Understanding the key access challenges

The Noosa Heads Ambulance Station needs regular maintenance across a range of rooftop areas, including the building’s gutters and other areas of the roof. There are also multiple roof levels that need to be accessed during routine inspections and maintenance work.

However, the site had no existing roof access system in place. This meant maintenance teams and contractors were put at potential safety risks when accessing the roof.

The client needed a solution that would provide safe, compliant access to the roof while supporting ongoing height safety inspections and maintenance work. The system also needed to be installed in a way that would not disrupt the day-to-day operations of the ambulance station.

Another key priority was to reduce the need for personal fall protection equipment where possible, such as safety harnesses. The focus was on installing permanent safety systems that would make accessing the roof safer and more straight forward for anyone carrying out any type of maintenance.

As the ambulance station is a government facility, the solution also needed to meet strict workplace and height safety standards. This meant the system had to be carefully designed and installed by an experienced roof safety specialist who understands the compliance requirements for this critical infrastructure.

A comprehensive and compliant roof access solution

After completing the site inspection, RISSafety designed a permanent roof safety system that worked well with the layout of the building and the way the roof needs to be accessed.

The system was created to provide a safe and easy access to all required roof areas while improving long-term safety and usability, and was installed without major disruption to day-to-day operations on site. The solution comprised the following key components:

Roof Access Ladders: RISSafety installed roof-to-roof access ladders to allow maintenance teams to move safely between the different roof levels. This removes the need to access multiple roof areas from the ground and makes it much easier for contractors and maintenance crews carrying out servicing or inspections to move around the roof safely and more efficiently.

Permanent roof safety handrails: Permanent roof handrails were installed along the roof edge in areas where regular maintenance is needed, including along the gutters and key roof entry points. These handrails provide fall protection and create a safer working environment for anyone who is accessing the roof. Installing permanent safety infrastructure such as guardrails also mitigates heavy reliance on harnesses alone for height safety.

Why permanent roof safety systems matter

For buildings such as emergency services facilities, government assets and commercial properties, a permanent roof safety system provides a safer and more practical alternative to temporary solutions.

Systems like permanent roof safety handrails, roof anchor points and fixed access ladders assist to:

  • Reduce the risk of falls from height
  • Improve compliance with workplace safety requirements
  • Support safe roof inspections and maintenance work
  • Make roof access simpler for facility managers and contractors

Working with an experienced roof safety specialist ensures that roof access systems are designed correctly and installed in line with Australian standards.
