Ensuring safety for workers and end users on infrastructure projects is vital, especially when dealing with large-scale projects like the rebuild of Transperth’s commuter rail network.
RISSafety recently used its decades of expertise to deliver safe roof access for workers at Perth’s Oat Street and Cannington stations.
With experience delivering safety systems on mass transit projects, RISSafety helped client Broad Construction meet their height safety requirements and ensured a smooth, safe and efficient workflow. Here’s how we did it.
Project overview
Work on the Oat Street and Cannington stations were delivered as part of a major upgrade of Transperth’s commuter rail network, the largest infrastructure project in Western Australia.
Broad Construction was responsible for delivering the project, and RISSafety was tasked with providing essential safety systems for roof access at both stations.
Our primary scope was ensuring safe access to all roofs on the stations, including providing access for regular maintenance and reaching higher areas, as well as creating secure pathways to internal plant rooms. By working closely with Broad Construction, we ensured our safety solutions aligned with the project’s goals and compliance standards.
Delivering a comprehensive roof access solution
Safety systems for roof access are crucial for workers performing maintenance or operating in elevated areas. RISSafety’s approach to the Oat Street and Cannington stations project was comprehensive, ensuring that all areas were equipped with the necessary infrastructure for safe roof access and movement.
Here’s a breakdown of the key elements delivered as part of the project:
- Horizontal line system installation: One of the most significant elements of the project was the installation of approximately 500 metres of horizontal line across both stations. This system provided safe access to various areas of the stations, essential for maintenance crews who needed to reach different sections of the stations while ensuring their safety.
- Custom ladders, stairs and platforms for internal access: RISSafety designed and installed custom ladders, stairs and platforms to allow access to internal plant rooms. These areas are essential for maintenance and operational tasks. The design was tailored to the specific needs of the station, taking into account space limitations and safety standards.
- Roof access hatches: To ensure safe entry and exit to the main roofs, RISSafety installed access hatches across both platforms. These hatches provide a safe way for workers to move from the platforms to the rooftops, significantly reducing the risks associated with accessing elevated areas.
- RISSafety’s anchor systems for enhanced safety: We also installed a variety of RISSafety anchors, which are integral to safe roof access. These anchors allow for secure attachment points, ensuring maintenance workers can safely work on roofs. By using high-quality materials and ensuring proper installation, we provided the client with a robust system that met their expectations for safety and compliance.
- Walkway systems for safe movement: To further improve safety, RISSafety provided around 250 metres of walkways across both stations. These walkways create safe travel paths across the main platform roofs with a stable, non-slip surface to reduce the risk of slips, trips, and falls – common hazards when navigating rooftops.
Building strong relationships
One of the standout achievements of the project was meeting all deadlines set by Broad Construction. This not only helped the project stay on track but also reinforced RISSafety’s reputation for professionalism and reliability.
Throughout project delivery we maintained strong communication and collaborated with the client to ensure every aspect of the height safety system met their standards.
This partnership has been invaluable in fostering long-term working relationships and ensuring that both RISSafety and Broad Construction could achieve their objectives.
