The upgrade of Nowergup Depot’s Railcar Modification Shed was finished in late 2025; a project that increased maintenance capacity for Transperth services in Perth’s north.
When DT Infrastructure reached the final stage of this upgrade they engaged RISSafety to design and install a roof safety system. The system would give workers access to all units and gutters on the roof while avoiding the structure’s skylights, which are considered a fall hazard.
Understanding the challenge
The problem was simple, but complex to solve: designing a roof safety system that addressed operational needs and kept teams fully protected, even as skylights and access points all compete for space. We’re known nationally as trusted roof safety specialists, so accounting for every conceivable fall risk when designing a solution that is both reliable and compliant is something we’re accustomed to.
Following detailed site inspections, structural reviews, and consultation with DT Infrastructure’s project team, RISSafety proposed a fully integrated system combining horizontal lifelines, aluminium walkways and roof access ladders.
The lifeline and walkway systems were chosen over anchor points as the latter would require teams to work dangerously close to fragile roof areas. Our height safety solution comprised the following:
- Installation of a continuous 720m horizontal line to provide safe access to the seven gutters on the roof.
- A total of 190m of aluminium walkway along certain parts of the horizontal line to provide easier access to services. The horizontal line was placed on the outside of the walkway to mitigate the risk of users walking on the inside and potentially hurting themselves.
- We also provided three ladders including one change-of-direction ladder, for safe access to the roofs.
A quality result, with an increased scope
The project was installed and delivered to the client in a timely manner without major project interruptions. Following the successful completion of this project, our team was asked to deliver the roof access ladders originally included in another package. This is a clear sign of DT Infrastructure’s confidence in both the quality and integrity of our completed system.
Today, teams at Nowergup Depot’s Modification Shed can now carry out essential roof works with confidence that their safety is front and centre. For asset owners, operators, and facility managers, this project demonstrates how early collaboration with a roof safety specialist like RISSafety leads to smarter, safer outcomes.
