A new access platform for 100 Mount Street

Commanding one of the prime locations in North Sydney, 100 Mount Street is a 34-floor commercial development that has won several accolades for architectural design and has achieved a GBCA 5-star Green Star Design.

A tower of such impressive proportions requires carefully considered safe access solutions. Grosvenor Engineering Group (GEG) initially engaged with RISSafety to design, construct and install a custom-built access platform “for the purpose of on-going, pro-active maintenance of critical plant and equipment,” says Matt Burns, business development manager at Grosvenor Engineering Group.

“We scoped possible solutions, with safety and design a key driver for this project. We decided to engage with RISSafety due to the specialist design requirement that we needed, and the implementation of the system in a high-risk area,” Matt explains.

Bespoke safety solutions are something the RISSafety team is no stranger to. “Our team was working in a space that had very limited access and room to work with,” explains Adam Waters, project manager at RISSafety.

“We had to maintain 3.5-metre height clearance on the driveway. Further to this the platform had to be low enough to fulfil its function of allowing a technician to remove air filters. This gave us a height tolerance of approximately 50mm.”

Additionally, the platform intercepted the suspended ceiling, which was on a 20-degree pitch. Design and installation for the droppers for the suspended platform also needed to cater for overhead obstructions including mechanical ventilation systems, fire management systems and electrical cable trays.

“The team at Grosvenor Engineering Group assisted greatly, working with us and addressing access limitations raised in the per commencement inspections,” says Adam, demonstrating clear lines of communication contributing greatly to a successful outcome.

The actual installation of the platform was completed on nights and weekends to avoid any disruption to the building owner and occupants during the day. Says Adam, “We also had challenges of getting it done around the Christmas holiday break period and with more Covid cases going around. We did a bit of personnel shuffling to ensure we had a full team at all times. The team worked hard and we were able to get the project done according to schedule.”

The resulting aluminium platforms now provide safe access and are made and tested to Australian standards and codes. Says Matt: “It was a great result under challenging circumstances.”

“We’re really happy with the result,” adds Adam. “It was great to work on such a prominent building in that area.”
