3 Rope Access Solutions for the Iconic Hampton Quarter

The Hampton Quarter boasts an incredible achievement for the Bayside area in Hampton, Victoria.  An expansive precinct that offers 159 high-end residential apartments that include 18 Homes Victoria apartments, 5 commercial sites, and 4 rooftops. RISSafety was given the challenging task of finding height system solutions for this unique project that included previously inaccessible areas and was built adjacent to an elevated train platform and powerlines.

Here are 3 height safety solutions that RISSafety provided for the bustling Hampton Quarter.

The Hampton Quarter is a unique precinct that contains 7 semi-connected buildings that requires rope access

As the building was semi-connected, it was imperative that the systems RISSafety selected could be shared across multiple areas. For these reasons, the davit arms and monorail trolleys were chosen.  Davit arms are crane-like suspension system designed to safely lift and lower workers or equipment from heights and confined spaces. A monorail trolley is a type of material handling device that runs along a single overhead rail (the monorail) to transport loads horizontally.

This solution posed three benefits:

  1. Lowering the amount of equipment that needed to be inspected
  2. Less maintenance equipment that is stored on-site
  3. Cost-saving solution for the builder

The strategy to install the cast-ins is vital for creating strong and stable structures, that also lowers the ongoing costs. RISSafety installed as many systems as possible on the roof to minimise disturbance to private residents living in the Hampton Quarter.

Previously inaccessible areas and unloadable building structures require safe rope access

RISSafety’s solution included the roadblock of being unable to load the facade building structures, such as the exoskeleton and the Glass Reinforced Concrete (GRC) cladding, at the Hampton Quarter. The solution was installing the davit arms system to prevent loading of the facade.

Soffitmounted monorails were used by maintenance staff to access areas that would otherwise have been inaccessible. This configuration allowed the monorail and its associated trolleys to run along the ceiling, efficiently utilising the space for moving materials or equipment horizontally.

For the pool area and ballast roof, fall arrest anchors and static lines were installed on bollards to work with the ballast roof whilst maintaining the pool area aesthetics as much as possible.

Fall arrest anchors are critical components in fall protection systems designed to secure workers and prevent falls from heights. A static line system is a type of fall protection system used where employees are at risk of falling from heights. Both work in tandem to achieve maximum safety for operators.

A rope access solution needs to be used due to the train station and power lines

The Hampton Quarter posed a unique problem in that it runs opposite powerlines and an elevated train platform for Hampton. Due to this, an Elevating Work Platform (EWP) such as boom lifts, scissor lifts, and vertical personnel lifts could not be used. Once again, RISSafety came up with the solution of using the Davit Arms system.

Davit Arms were used as the connection base is permanent but can be visually hidden. The visual element can be dismantled and stowed away when not in use, reducing the amount of interference it has in private and shared spaces.

These rope access systems also ensured cleaners could now clean the facade where previously EWPs could not operate.

The Hampton Quarter stands as a testament to innovative design and engineering, overcoming unique challenges with RISSafety’s advanced height safety solutions. By integrating davit arms, monorail trolleys, and custom fall protection systems, they ensured seamless access and maintenance across complex structures. RISSafety’s expertise has not only enhanced safety but also streamlined operations and showcasing our commitment to excellence in height safety.
