Queens Walk Development: RISSafety Delivers Height Safety Solutions for Major Social Housing Project

RISSafety is happy to share a recent service and product solution delivered for a significant project in Tasmania.

The Queens Walk Development is an important social housing expansion project involving a $24 million expansion of the existing Queens Walk social housing complex in Cornelian Bay, Hobart.

Designed by Cumulus Studio, the development will provide 65 additional homes for Tasmanians needing safe, secure and stable housing. The project will also improve communal areas and update infrastructure for existing residents.

RISSafety was tasked with providing a comprehensive and compliant solution for Stages 2 and 3 of the project, including full safe access and roof maintenance walkway system (external and internal). This involved:

  • Installation of 100m aluminium walkway to three buildings
  • Designed approved guardrail systems to comply with Standards vs Abseiling Solution
  • Three purpose-built buildings, 131 anchor points system and components
  • 13 designed and installed ladder systems with four hatch access areas.

A fully compliant solution

RISSafety delivered a fully compliant solution that met Australian standards in the time frames set by the project budget manager. Our proposed solution fully satisfied our client Fairbrother’s design values, demonstrating robust methodology and compliance while meeting all applicable legislation requirements.

Fairbrother also appreciated RISSafety’s reliable roof safety solution that added value to the project while offering enhanced safety efficiency. The client helped us ensure project success by actively engaging with the team, implementing recommending solutions, and establishing a smooth workflow for both inspections and implementation phases. This collaborative approach helped deliver the project on time.

Putting safety at the heart of every project

Working at heights is fraught with risk to workers. From exposed edges to fragile surfaces and weather-related implications, as well as the risk of injuries from falls, working at heights is one of the most hazardous aspects of commercial construction that requires meticulous planning, comprehensive safety systems and stringent protocols to protect workers.

Implementing correct height safety systems and protection is imperative on every project to ensure worker safety, comply with workplace health and safety regulations, and prevent potentially fatal accidents when working at elevated heights. These systems protect people and help maintain project efficiency by allowing workers to perform their duties with confidence and security.

RISSafety eliminates hazards at the planning/design stage as part of providing innovative solutions. This is more cost-efficient than implementing changes later in project delivery when hazards can increase costs and reduce productivity.

How RISSafety added value to the project

As per the contract, RISSafety team members delivered all project components to budget and time constraints while the building continued to be used. This ensured minimal disruption to ongoing operations and tenant activities.

The team also targeted cost savings for the client at every opportunity, meticulously reviewing each aspect of the project for potential efficiencies. By proceeding with the chosen option rather than the abseiling solution or pre-fabricated gantry system options, RISSafety provided a lower cost solution that maintained the highest safety standards. This enabled a cost saving for the client in excess of $100,000.

The relationship between Fairbrother and RISSafety was solidified on this project, with the client expressing how much they are looking forward to working with us again, and are happy to recommend our services and team to clients.
