Is your rooftop solar installation site compliant?

In response to a host of non-compliance issues identified during project visits in 2021, SafeWork NSW inspectors are cracking down on businesses that manufacture, sell, design and install roof solar systems.

Until December 2022, SafeWork inspectors will be thoroughly checking relevant sites for safety plans and that site-specific safe work method statements (SWMS) are being adhered to by contractors and teams. Non-compliant sites – be it issues involving inadequate scaffolding or high falls risks – will face on-the-spot fines of up to $3,600. Individual workers may also face fines of $720 for conducting unlicensed work.

Safeguard your team

Here are the measures to have in place to ensure you site is complaint:

• Ensure you have a site-specific SWMS prepared for each job that involves a fall risk, or work on or near electricity or asbestos. The statements must identify all hazards and risks at the time of quotation.
• Provide your workers with the correct safety equipment for the job, and ensure they know how to use it confidently.
• Have scaffolding or temporary edge protection such as roof rails where needed around roof edges and voids to prevent falls.
• Ensure all workers have appropriate licenses for the jobs they are completing on site.
