A Custom Gantry Solution for Flinders University

Flinders Custom Gantry

Custom height safety solutions may seem simple in principle, but they require strict attention to detail and thorough understanding of client needs and site specifications. The fact is there is no one-size-fits-all solution that will assure compliance. Every site and every client need differs and solutions must be customised to those needs to ensure secure system installation and compliance with national standards. We pride ourselves on providing a consistent, end-to-end solution to height safety, from initial site inspection to design and installation of required systems.

When approached by Flinders University to provide a solution for safe and compliant access around the canopy of the Library and Student Hub, we rose to the challenge. Says RISSafety Safety and Rescue Advisor, Rob Tucker: “Flinders University had recently undergone a major chilled water pipe carrying upgrade that required large pipes to be installed over the two main central box gutters.

Our challenge was to provide a safe and compliant access system that could not be seen from the courtyard area below and made a minimal aesthetic impact.”

After assessing the site requirements, Rob and his team provided the client with several access options to allow the client to decide which configuration they were most comfortable with. “This is the first time I have worked with RIS,” says Patrick Burley, Principal Project Manager, Capital Development at Flinders University. “RIS provided a number of solution options for consideration and were willing to spend the time to understand the project brief and our specific requirements and constraints.”

It was decided that a double gantry walkway system would be the most appropriate solution, providing a single horizontal lifeline system down the centre of the area, complemented by a second fall barrier. “The RIS team appears to have a good practical knowledge of height safety standards and practices and were able to provide us with a good practical solution to a tricky access issue,” adds Patrick.
To maintain high-quality standards and consistency the system was manufactured and installed by the team, well within schedule. Says Rob: “The design and install process went smoothly and the project team communicated the various stages well.” The result is a fully compliant gantry system that assures the safety of maintenance workers and contractors working at heights.
